SUB 1X12 EDGE - True cinema bass performance

One of the best possible cinema experiences is when you feel the bass sound pressure waves go through your body. Every punch, every explosion, or racing car have to be reproduced accurately and with maximum impact. This is exactly what the 1X12 EDGE was constructed to do. Due to its extremely rigid and lightweight diaphragm, it can handle the longest strokes with perfect accuracy. Since the woofer is powered by an ICEpower® amplifier capable of 700 W RMS / 1045 W peak power, the 1X12 EDGE is always in full control. If you want to feel the whole home cinema shake but still listen to highly controlled, impactful sound, the 1X12 EDGE is a perfect choice.
Driver
Driver

Throughout its proprietary development, the advanced High-Speed Ultra-Long-Stroke driver of the Cinema 1X12 EDGE is designed specifically for the requirements of a home cinema subwoofer with a high maximum sound pressure level and low limit frequency. With its ultra-light membrane material and an extremely powerful magnet, it is able to carry out even the fastest strokes in almost perfect piston-like motion. Compared to the old 1X12 the 1X12 EDGE is equipped with the new XTZ SA-1 ICEpower® Class-D amplifier with 1045 Watts peak power, which ensures almost perfect clipping characteristic, and provides maximum headroom and thus the highest dynamics.

Sound Tuning
Sound Tuning

To optimally adjust the sound of this unique subwoofer to your needs and to your room, the Cinema 1X12 EDGE has pre-programmed EQ settings which offer the possibility of equalizing the sound so it can adapts to different kinds of rooms. While the EQ “REF” provides maximum depth in the bass, “EQ1” cuts the deepest frequencies to adapt the sound to smaller rooms with high room gain. “EQ2” lifts the kick bass to achieve a punchier bass. To even further adjust the sound, the subwoofer offers a parametric EQ which can be set between 30 Hz and 120 Hz and alter the SPL from - 9 dB to + 9 dB. Additional adjustments can be made by sealing the slot shaped bass reflex tube with the supplied plug. Then, the 1X12 EDGE will behave like a closed box construction with maximum precision and an earlier sloping bass. Thus, the entire characteristic of the subwoofer can be optimally adapted to your needs.

Cabinet
Cabinet

In order to keep resonances within the housing to a minimum, a specific trapezoidal shape for the cabinet was selected. The exterior walls are made of 18 mm MDF, reinforced with 40 mm thick bracings. The front wall is 30 mm thick, creating an extremely stable structure. Inside the case many layers of insulating material are used to absorb backward radiated sound. All these design elements together with the precisely sized cabinet ensure the subwoofer’s sound is accurate and controlled at any sound pressure level.

Surface
Surface

The surface used on the Cinema 1X12 EDGE a special anti-reflection coating. The matte black anti-reflective polyurethane paint is applied in 8 layers to provide an optimal result. Afterwards, an ornate polishing ensures a perfect and very appealing finish. Thus, keeping disturbing light reflections on the surface to a minimum.

Terminal
Terminal

The rear terminal supports connections using either an RCA or XLR cable. A XLR pass-through output allows the XLR input signal to be forwarded, for example, to a second subwoofer in a multi-subwoofer configuration. Crossover frequency, phase and volume can be adjusted precisely, and the EQ modes and PEQ settings can be used to customize the sound to the room and personal preference.

Front Cover
Front Cover

The front cover of the Cinema 1X12 EDGE has a magnetic mount.  The inserted black acoustic material is opaque and completely transparent to sound. It protects the drivers from potential damage.

Bass Driver

The 12 inch woofer of the Cinema Series is an advanced High-Speed Ultra-Long-Stroke driver which uses a very light cone material and a very strong motor (magnet) structure. We choose fast and light drivers to give both high speed, and maximum dynamic sound. The bass drivers are able to perform the ultra-long strokes with a maximum of linearity and we also developed a special NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) surround to complement them.

The requirements of the driver means that to achieve the highest SPL, even down to the lowest frequencies, the box needs to be big. This is just pure physics. An optimized volume for the driver gives the perfect air resistance to the driver. This results in the highest SPL at low frequencies, with maximum head room from the amp. Boxes that are too small or too big  lead to over-damped or under-damped subwoofers that have increased distortion. A box with an optimal volume has low distortion and the widest frequency response possible enabling the subwoofer to deliver the lowest and deepest bass with a sound that is still clean yet has a lot of headroom for the amplification.

We required our subwoofer to provide very high sound pressure levels yet remain precise and true to the original content.  We met this challenge by using the specially developed low-mass long throw driver. The 12 inch cone consists of a very strong, long fiber pulp blended material optimizing the diaphragm’s stiffness to weight ratio. Our custom designed drivers have several more advantages to achieve the perfect bass:

  • FEA Optimized magnetic field design incorporating a tightly focused “T” pole design
  • Advanced level of large signal motor and suspension refinement using a KLIPPEL laser-based test system
  • Large aluminum shorting ring to minimize inductance and further lower non-linear distortion
  • Ultra-high temp aluminum voice coil with Airflow Maximizer Design
  • Special NBR rubber surround with maximum linearity throughout its excursion range
  • Spider fabricated from a unique blend of poly-cotton and pure NOMEX
ICEpower® Class-D Amplifier

The 1X12 EDGE uses our new SA-1 subwoofer amplifier based on ICEpower® audio technology. ICEpower® modules are used in many very costly designs thanks to its extreme performance (S/N at 117 dB) and huge power output capability. Another astonishing advantage is the high efficiency and thus lower energy consumption while delivering maximum dynamics.

The SA-1 is an even more advanced amplifier than the one which is used in the previous 1X12 subwoofer due to a higher power output and improved impulse response. It also offers additional sound tuning options with a parametric EQ (PEQ) and pre-programmed EQ modes (REF, EQ1, EQ2). This new amplifier features an advanced digital signal processor (DSP) that gives the amplifier extreme control over the driver.

Digital Signal Processor (DSP)

The digital signal processor (DSP) used in the XTZ SA-1 subwoofer amplifier is very powerful, designed from the ground up. The DSP controls the subwoofer's frequency response in real-time, with total control over the cone movements, and with the available adjustments the sound can be tailored for a mighty bass experience, to say the least. The DSP works with extremely high precision, and high speed. It has a Dual Precision filter with 56 bit resolution and continuously makes 50 million calculations per second (50 MHz).

Built-in parametric EQ (PEQ)

A parametric equalizer (PEQ) is an adjustable filter and a very powerful tool where the user can target and compensate for issues with room modes and nodes that are unique for every listening area. To use this function in the best possible way, we recommend using measuring equipment like the XTZ Room Analyzer II Pro (sold separately) to really see how the listening area is performing. There you can use the Real Time Analysis (RTA) measuring (at ear height) in a couple of different places within your listening area, to see if a certain frequency range have a repeating pattern e.g. a "dip" or "peak". Set the PEQ to On on the subwoofer amplifier terminal, then set the gain to either + 9 or - 9 to see what frequency is targeted. Trim the frequency to the correct spot and adjust the gain to balance out a dip or a peak.
